After working in Brittany, Venice, Bruges, on the banks of Lake Majeur, and at Villefranche-sur-Mer and Moret-sur-Loing, the artist Henri Le Sidaner settled and painted tirelessly in Gerberoy where he found great inspiration in the garden which he created.
Etienne Le Sidaner has entrusted the keys to his grandfather’s legendary garden to an association created to restore and showcase it in guided tours – the Association of Henri Le Sidaner in his Gerberoy Garden (Henri Le Sidaner en son Jardin de Gerberoy.)
From the artist’s home on rue Le Sidaner in the heart of Gerberoy, the garden is found by following the tiny cobbled street rue St. Amand and turning left at the corner where the Blue House (Maison Bleu) has stood since 1691. Pass under the large arch – the Tour Porte of the former castle. Continue along the path that follows the walls of the painter’s garden on your left and leads you down to a small wooden door which opens on to the White Garden at the lowest level of the garden. Impressive beds of flowers frame a large lawn. Beyond are more gardens surrounded by small groves linked by steep paths winding under the trees. They lead up to the famous rose garden nestled in the ruins of the former castle. Beside the rose gardens, surrounded by small boxwood parterres, a small summer house reminds us that Henri Le Sidaner was fond of creating sketches in his garden for the paintings he completed in his studio. Looking up you see a rotunda crowned by a pavilion approached through a pergola. From there, the view is of gentle, rolling countryside. A thousand roses climb the walls and the long terraces of the garden. The garden visit concludes outside on Gerberoy’s ramparts for one last view of the artist’s domain.
